Head of Human Resources

About the role

The Head of Human Resources is responsible the design and delivery of People initiatives in line with the business strategy. The role is offered on a part-time basis, ideally working 24 hours per week. Based in our Newcastle Head Office this National role will also support staff across all branches including Singleton, Sydney and Adelaide.

A hands-on role, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee compliance and interpretation of applicable awards. Maintain and pursue knowledge of employment legislation and reforms to ensure compliance.
  • Oversee and manage the people functions including but not limited to recruitment, on-boarding, exit interviews, performance improvement plans and employee performance management.
  • Support and coach members of the team, being a point of escalation on all people related topics including helping to resolve workplace conflict and liaising between parties.
  • Preparation and processing of payroll.
  • Contribute to the development of HR and OHS frameworks, policies, procedures, plans, and supporting documents.
  • Monitor and report on staffing requirements. Support and implement key talent processes such as succession planning, engagement, and retention processes.
  • Working with function leaders and managers to ensure workplace health and safety is a priority.
  • Organise employee training and development programs.
  • Lead HR Calendar of Events – support cyclical HR activities such as performance and remuneration review, and health & well being initiatives.

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate will be an experienced Human Resources Manager, ideally with payroll experience. An autonomous, self-starter who enjoys taking the initiative, the successful candidate will enjoy being hands on and fostering a positive team culture.

Other areas to ensure your success include:

  • Great people skills and empathy to ensure employees feel safe voicing their concerns
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with employees at all levels of the organisation
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to make confident recruitment decisions
  • Experience and working knowledge of Xero and Deputy
  • Good analytical skills to quickly analyse and grasp different parties’ needs and situations
  • Good negotiation skills to help resolve conflict
  • Flexibility to quickly adapt to changing personnel requirements
